I am testing an idea that has to do with a daily blog group with a post and reply space.  If you get this message, can you post below what word or words spoke to you in this passage?       Create in me a clean heart, Oh God, and renew a right spirit within me.  Cast me not away from your presence and take not your holy spirit from me.  Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with your free spirit.

Does quitting = doing? Salt & light - where is it seen? Inexplicable events - can you think of any?

Hello Friends!

We're off to a pretty great start with around 15 of you tuning in to our first two weeks despite it being a busy time with school and all the trickle down from that new stage.

Reading for the next two weeks:

  1. Read Chapter 9 of LOVE DOES.

  2. Read and ponder Matthew 5:13-16 (see a couple of versions below if you don't have time to open your bible)

Please read the thoughts below that come from the study guide to prepare for our time together.

First, Bob Goff quit school for a time and his quitting led to new decisions and learning. He asks us to ponder quitting things in order to be more mindful of ways we can see how LOVE DOES in our lives and the lives of others. Do you have a story of quitting something that has opened a new door for you? What "stuff" has Jesus prompted you to leave behind so you can say yes to "new stuff"? Maybe just pondering this will allow you to see where the deliberate pauses and open windows of time can bear fruit or open our hearts and minds. Ideas mentioned in the study guide: no texting when driving, skipping a meal, no technology after dinner, hitting your snooze button, not being perfect in one area before allowing yourself something fun...

Matthew 5: 13-16 (Message) Let me tell you why you are here. You're here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You've lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage. Here's another way to put it: You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand. Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand - shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

( NRS version)You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. "You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

COMMENTARY NOTES: Salt was used in ancient times to preserve and dry meats. Jesus' followers are to act in ways that preserve and sustain life on Earth - acting in ways that heal and restore. And light is like the lamp shining into a dark corner. God's people are to reveal things as they really are. Christians believe that God's kingdom is here now and that things can be here on earth as they are in heaven. We don't assert this with our lips but we demonstrate with our lives.

Questions:

What are good ways you have seen Christians be "salty"?

Is it possible to snuff out your light wiht the way you try to be salt?

Where are you being salty? Where do you need to grow?

After reading Chapter 9, "Just Say Yes", consider this:

  • Did you feel positive or negative thoughts after reading this chapter?

  • Bob says "I think God sometimes uses the completely inexplicable events in our lives to point us toward Him". What do you think about this? COVID? Another example?
